Abstract

To evaluate the clinical results of surgical repair for ruptured Achilles tendon, using single Krackow technique and early postoperative exercise, 20 cases were studied. Ruptured tendon was repaired by single Krackow method. At one week after operation, range of motion exercise started with controlled ankle motion brace. After 4~6 weeks, progressive weight bearing with 1 cm heel lift in brace, limiting ankle to neutral, was allowed. Clinical results were evaluated by modified Rupp score and Arner-Lindholm scale. There was one rerupture case, following unadvised weight bearing. Except a rerupture case, clinical results, assessed with modified Rupp score, showed excellent in 4, good in 13, fair in 2 and poor in 0. Arner-Lindholm scale was excellent in 17, good in 2 and poor in 0. From this study, single Krackow suture method and early protected exercise is regarded as a reasonable treatment option for managing ruptured Achilles tendon.
